Maitake extract — contains the polysaccharide beta-glucan which activates antitumor protection of the body: increases the rate of maturation, activity and life span of macrophages, natural killer cells and cytotoxic T-lymphocytes so that they can more efficiently destroy the tumor cells; increases production of interleukin-6 known for its effective fighting against cancer cells. Maitake causes sharp deceleration of proliferation of blood vessels in the tumor, leading to gradual stopping of nutrient supply to the tumor and its death (apoptosis), which does not result in the damage to or inflammation of the neighboring cells, as opposed to passive necrosis of the tumor cells induced by the chemotherapy.
Aside from high general antitumor activity shown by maitake extract in tumors of lungs, brain, liver, pancreas, stomach, rectum, in melanoma and leucosis, it is particularly effective in the treatment of cancer of breast, uterus; ovarian, prostate and bladder cancer. Mastopathy also perfectly respond to treatment with this agent. According to the most recent data, the antitumor activity of maitake extract is 20-28 times stronger compared to that of the other extracts of medicinal mushrooms.
Taking of the extract reduces the side effects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy: decreased appetite, vomiting, nausea, hair loss, pain and lower white blood cell count in 90% of patients. Furthermore, combined therapy including chemotherapeutic agents and maitake extract gives more pronounced results than with the use of the chemotherapy alone.
Maitake extract is widely used in the pathology of endocrine glands (hypo- and hyperthyroidism) and produces the regulating and normalizing action. Diabetes, disorders of the thyroid and adrenal function, pituitarism, severe symptoms of climax and ovarian dysfunction – this list of diseases where maitake shows high activity is far from complete. Maitake extract increases the insulin production, smoothly controls blood glucose level and normalizes the sensitivity of cells to insulin. Maitake mushroom in Japan is called “geisha mushroom” or “grace mushroom”. It helps to lose excess weight owing to normalization of hormone and carbohydrate metabolism, prevents fatty liver, and suppresses the feeling of hunger.
