Milk thistle fruits — contain flavonoids, flavonolignans, alkaloids, saponins, proteins, fatty oil, fat-soluble vitamins – A, D, E, K, resins, tyramines, mucus, major nutrient- and trace elements: magnesium, potassium, calcium, chromium, iodine, selenium, vanadium, and strontium, but the most important is the silymarin, just it ensures the hepatoprotective properties of the milk thistle to a greater extent. For this reason, the milk thistle is used in the combination therapy and prophylaxis for disorders of the liver function. It is effective against the toxic action of harmful substances making the liver membrane permeable for them. The milk thistle contributes to neutralization of free radicals and increases the level of a major antioxidant – glutathione, it reduces the inflammation and scarring of the liver, minimises the impact of medicinal drugs and toxins, and helps the liver to regenerate liver tissues. The milk thistle inhibits viral replication and growth of malignant tumours in the liver.
The milk thistle helps to reduce high level of cholesterol, contributes to blood cleansing and prevents arterial injuries. It maintains the endocrine and digestive systems, contributes to formation of enzymes increasing the bile production, eliminating heartburn and soothing gastric mucosa.
The milk thistle also cleanses the body of metabolic waste, thus regulating the function of gallbladder; it helps to prevent the incidence of gallstones and kidney stones.
